Artist: Jan Paul Wolff, Austria and Italy
Oil on Panel, 45 × 45 cm
In Manic, Jan demonstrates the strong use of chiaroscuro to create a play of light and shadow. This piece also investigates the complexity of expression as it questions wether a smile is in fact always positive - a dualism in itself. Light cuts upward, sharp and strange, casting unfamiliar shadows across a face that smiles, but not quite. The chiaroscuro draws us in, a dance of brightness and dark, of presence and absence. There is beauty here, but it wavers. The expression is almost joyful, yet unsettled - a reflection of the manic mind: vivid, electric, slightly uneasy. This is not joy but a moment suspended between euphoria and distortion, where the world tilts.
