With inspiration from the flood God created in the story of Noah’s ark, the conception here is to tell the untold stories of the people who were abandoned for the waves to take. Maya’s painting depicts a groom who is seeing the end of his life near. He is in a boat with three women, one being the bride. The figures represent how humans experience grief, embrace, fight, and denial. Together they are the trinity of the heart, body and mind. The Artist chose for the setting to be a wedding day because it stands in such a large contrast to the overall situation. The title, The Dying Groom, is meant to symbolize something dying before it has had the chance to come into fruition.
Artist Biography
Maya Valeria Barrett affirms that when creating her compositions on the canvas, she approaches them both as an author and a poet, delving into roles and emotions that are either unfamiliar or uncomfortably familiar—those aspects of herself and others that her ego might otherwise villainize. The Artist's aim is to look beyond judgment, to transform complexity into beauty, and to cultivate a sense of empathy and release within her work. She draws inspiration from life: the dead ends and fresh starts, childhood memories, the bond between people and animals, the ache of a broken heart, and the warmth of love. The artist has strengths in composition, likeness to the model, and expression, along with a willingness to make drastic changes if it serves her painting better, she says. Her personal goal is to further develop her technical skill with textures, experiment with light in paintings, and refine perspective, while also adding beauty through ornaments and patterns. Maya Valeria Barrett is currently self-studying etching and printmaking practices.

Ispirandosi al diluvio universale narrato nella storia dell'arca di Noè, l'idea dell'artista è quella di raccontare la storia delle persone che sono state abbandonate alle onde.
Il dipinto raffigura uno sposo che vede avvicinarsi la fine della sua vita. Si trova su una barca con tre donne, una delle quali è la sposa, e ognuna di loro rappresenta una diversa fase del dolore. Abbracciare e lasciar andare, lottare e negare, ignorare e congelare. Insieme sono la trinità del cuore, del corpo e della mente. L'artista ha scelto di ambientare la scena nel giorno del loro matrimonio perché è in forte contrasto con la situazione in cui si trovano. Il titolo, «Lo sposo morente», vuole simboleggiare qualcosa che muore prima di aver avuto la possibilità di realizzarsi.
