There is an art born of its time and an "eternal" art, capable of speaking to every era. It is to the latter that the sculptor has chosen to dedicate his life. The Gates of Paradise were a true obsession, Ghiberti a true master, and the Tuscan Renaissance an academy. Reinterpreting the form of the Sacrifice of Isaac today is for the artist an act of devotion and denunciation. The work "Libera Nos" was born as a reflection on feminicides, the indifference and violence of the present. An angel stops the man's hand, but behind it lie wars, ostriches hiding their heads, broken religious symbols. Riva believes in a contemporary art, clear, universal, a witness to its time. May it awaken us, may it free us.
Artist Biography
Ugo Riva was born in Bergamo on August 9, 1951. From his youth and throughout his high school years, he developed a strong interest in figurative art, which soon gave way, starting in 1977, to an interest in sculpture, to which he would devote himself throughout his intense career. He frequented the studio of a sculptor from Bergamo. His work during this early period was close to expressionist trends, from which he later, during the 1980s, moved away in favor of a more in-depth study of classicism, understood as a living and life-giving source from which to draw emotions and feelings to relive and make his own. During the 1990s, references to mythology and
classical literature became significantly less frequent in his works. Contemporaneity became the object of his interest and in ‘narrating’ it, his attention was always focused on the feelings and impulses that outline a human life lived to the full.
This is why he represents love in its infinite dimensions: sensuality, motherhood, the anguishing loneliness of the individual. From the beginning of his career, he experimented with different materials, from concrete to stone, from marble to wood, but it was with clay that he found the greatest affinity. Thanks to its malleability, this material allowed him to represent the signs, vibrations, and passions of the subjects that inspired his sculptures.
With his subjects and his “sculpture of fragility,” Riva seeks to capture the climate of
unease and contradiction in which contemporary man lives, suspended between self-affirmation and the feeling of death. Since 1973, Ugo Riva has held over thirty solo exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Monumental sculptures are held by institutional bodies: the most recent is the important acquisition by the Province of Bergamo of the work Gli Imperturbabili Dei (The Imperturbable Gods), purchased on the occasion of the retrospective dedicated to him in the spring of 2008. Nevertheless, some works, also large in size, are present in important private collections, including Inaz S.p.A.

C’è un’arte figlia del suo tempo e un’arte “eterna”, capace di parlare a ogni epoca. E’ a questa seconda che lo scultore ha scelto di dedicare la sua vita. La porta del paradiso è stata una vera ossessione, Ghiberti un vero maestro e il rinascimento toscano una accademia.
Reinterpretare oggi la formella del Sacrificio di Isacco è per l’Artista un atto di devozione e denuncia. L’opera “Libera Nos” nasce come riflessione sui femminicidi, l’indifferenza e la violenza del presente. Un angelo ferma la mano dell’uomo ma dietro si celano guerre, struzzi che nascondono la testa, simboli religiosi spezzati. Riva crede in un’arte contemporanea, chiara, universale, testimone del proprio tempo.

Ugo Riva nasce a Bergamo il 9 agosto del 1951. Sin dalla sua gioventù e nel periodo degli studi superiori si sviluppa in lui un forte interesse per l’arte figurativa che lascerà ben presto lo spazio, a partire dal 1977, all’interesse per la scultura alla quale si dedicherà nel corso della sua intensa carriera. Frequenta lo studio di uno scultore bergamasco. Il suo lavoro di questo periodo giovanile è vicino alle tendenze espressionistiche, dalle quali successivamente, nel corso degli anni ‘80, si allontana in favore di uno studio più approfondito della classicità intesa come sorgente viva e vivificante da cui attingere emozioni e sentimenti da rivivere e da fare propri. Nel corso degli anni ‘90 ha notevolmente diradato nelle opere i riferimenti alla mitologia e alla letteratura del mondo classico.
La contemporaneità diventa l’oggetto del suo interesse e nel "raccontarla" la sua attenzione è sempre rivolta ai sentimenti e alle pulsioni che disegnano il contorno di una vita umana pienamente vissuta. È per questo che egli rappresenta l’amore nelle sue infinite dimensioni: la sensualità, la maternità, l’angosciante solitudine del singolo. Sin dall’inizio della sua carriera sperimenta diversi materiali, dal cemento alla pietra, dal marmo al legno, ma sarà con l’argilla che incontrerà maggiore affinità. Questo materiale grazie alla sua malleabilità gli consentirà di rappresentare i segni, le vibrazioni e le passioni dei soggetti che ispirano le sue sculture.
Con i suoi soggetti e con la sua "scultura della fragilità" Riva cerca di registrare il clima di inquietudine e contraddizione in cui vive l’uomo contemporaneo, sospeso tra l’affermazione di se stesso e il sentimento della morte. Ugo Riva ha tenuto, dal 1973 ad oggi, oltre trenta mostre personali in Italia e all’estero. Sculture di dimensione monumentale sono presso enti istituzionali: la più recente è l’importante acquisizione da parte della Provincia di Bergamo dell’opera gli Imperturbabili Dei, opera comprata in occasione della retrospettiva che gli ha dedicato nella primavera del 2008. Non di meno alcune opere, sempre di grande dimensione, sono presenti in importanti collezioni private fra cui la Inaz S.p.A.
