The sculpture depicts a scene from the Old Testament, the moment after the walls of Jericho collapsed, when the Israelites entered the city. The fall of a besieged city in the Bronze Age was almost always accompanied by violence and destruction. The work shows an old man lying on the ground, his son kneeling, trying to protect him, while a conqueror raises his armed fist, ready to strike. For some, this scene represents the victory of the victors over the vanquished; for others, however, it reveals the horrors of war and the dual nature of human beings: faithful and protective, but also aggressive and destructive. Time and historical context determine which side of history we look at. The dynamic composition evokes an event that, despite having occurred thousands of years ago, continues to resonate in the collective consciousness.
Artist Biography
Eirik Arnesen (b. 1990), from Norway, received his education in the figurative arts at The Florence Academy of Art in Florence Italy, where he studied sculpture under Robert Bodem. His focus is on the human body and the goal is to produce carefully thought out works with solid construction and organic naturalism in order to create convincing images of the human body in accordance with the realist tradition. Eirik currently works as a Principal Instructor of Sculpture at Florence Academy of Art.

La scultura raffigura una scena dell'Antico Testamento, nel momento successivo al crollo delle mura di Gerico, quando gli Israeliti penetrano nella città. La caduta di una città assediata, nell'età del bronzo, era quasi sempre accompagnata da violenza e distruzione. L’opera mostra un anziano disteso a terra, il figlio inginocchiato che tenta di proteggerlo, mentre un conquistatore solleva il pugno armato, pronto a colpire. Per alcuni, questa scena rappresenta la vittoria dei vincitori sui vinti; per altri, invece, rivela gli orrori della guerra e la doppia natura dell'essere umano: fedele e protettivo, ma anche aggressivo e distruttivo. Il tempo e il contesto storico determinano da che parte si guarda la storia. La composizione dinamica restituisce un evento che, pur avvenuto migliaia di anni fa, continua a risuonare nella coscienza collettiva.
Biografia dell’artista
Eirik Arnesen (nato nel 1990), originario della Norvegia, ha studiato arti figurative presso la Florence Academy of Art a Firenze, dove ha studiato scultura con Robert Bodem. Il suo interesse principale è il corpo umano e il suo obiettivo è quello di realizzare opere attentamente studiate, dalla struttura solida e dal naturalismo anatomico, al fine di creare immagini suggestive del corpo umano in linea con la tradizione realista. Eirik attualmente lavora come docente principale di scultura presso la Florence Academy of Art.
