Artwork Description
This artwork reflects upon Ghiberti’s panel, the Battle of Jericho, by examining the idea of war and conflict. Specifically, the composition aims to do this by emphasizing the cyclic, circular, repeating nature of war though human history; adding an edge of satire to underline the futility and romanization of this endemic act. In Medias Res combines two culminating battles between the Trojans and the Greeks from Homer’s Iliad. Here the favor of the gods has momentarily shifted to the Trojans, thus pushing the Greeks back to their ships and to the brink of defeat:

"Thus loudly roaring, and o’erpowering all,
Mount the thick Trojans up the Grecian wall;
Legions on legions from each side arise:
Thick sound the keels; the storm of arrows flies.
Fierce on the ships above, the cars below,
These wield the mace, and those the javelin throw."

"Then Ajax seized the fragment of a rock,
Applied each nerve and swinging round on high,
With force tempestuous, let the ruin fly (...)"
Artist Biography
As the great grandchild of two Nobel prize winning scientists (Svante Arrhenius and George De Hevesy) and the explorer to first round the Northeast Passage Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, Alex Paul’s imaginative paintings are informed by a familial past rife with heroic tales, old manuscripts, and relics from the orient. His work searches for the ideal language to convey the music of each specific idea, both emotional and conceptual, leaning heavily on traditional philosophies of artistry to convey contemporary thought. Today Alex pursues a split career in Beverly Hills California, half the day as an aerospace scientist and half the day as an artist.

Quest'opera riflette sul pannello di Ghiberti “La battaglia di Gerico” esaminando il concetto di “guerra e conflitto”. Nello specifico, la composizione mira a farlo enfatizzando la natura ciclica, circolare e ripetitiva della guerra nel corso della storia umana, aggiungendo un tocco di satira per sottolineare l'inutilità e la banalizzazione di questo atto endemico.“In Medias Res” combina due battaglie culminanti tra Troiani e Greci dall'Iliade di Omero. Qui il favore degli dei si è momentaneamente spostato sui Troiani, spingendo così i Greci sulle loro navi e sull'orlo della sconfitta:

"Così i Troiani valicarono il muro con grande clamore,
spingevano i cavalli e si battevano presso le poppe
delle navi con le lance a due punte, sui lori carri.
Gli altri erano saliti sulle nere navi e dall’alto
brandivano lunghe pertiche: stavano lì sulle tolde
per gli scontri in mare, ben saldate e rivestite di bronzo in punta."

"Subito dopo, Aiace sollevava un macigno molto più grosso
e ruotandolo in aria lo scagliò: v’impresse una forza smisurata;
frantumò così lo scudo, colpendolo con il sasso simile ad una macina,
e gli fiaccò le ginocchia. Ettore cadde lungo disteso a terra,
con tutto lo scudo addosso."

Pronipote di due scienziati premi Nobel (Svante Arrhenius e George De Hevesy) e dell'esploratore che per primo doppiò il Passaggio a Nord-Est Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, i dipinti immaginifici di Alex Paul sono influenzati da un passato familiare ricco di racconti eroici, vecchi manoscritti e reliquie orientali. Il suo lavoro cerca il linguaggio ideale per trasmettere la musica di ogni specifica idea, sia emotiva che concettuale, appoggiandosi fortemente alle filosofie tradizionali dell'arte per trasmettere il pensiero contemporaneo.
