Just like how the world was created in the story of Adam and Eve, so can Noah and the Ark be seen as the world’s second beginning. In this painting, the artist chose to focus on the moment after the flood. Instead of making a depiction of the deluge when all is lost, After the Flood shows how life starts to reassemble. The flood has gone, the horrors of the catastrophe have been washed away and the world starts to wake up. Ghiberti showed in his masterwork a small group of people stepping out of the Ark and observing a changed world for the first time. Just like Noah can be seen as the second Adam, so can a female figure be seen as the successor of Eve. Because of this, the Artist chose to depict a woman lying on a rock amidst a wasteland of water. She is waking up, her hair still wet and her form weary from the disaster. The rock and the woman are all alone in this flooded world, but some small flowers and plants spring forth between the crevices and mud. Though the dark clouds are still hovering over the world, the sun is starting to break through.
This piece shows the stage between grief and hope; the hope for a new beginning. It shows the viewer the moment one licks their own wounds and starts to see that there really could be a future once again. The story of the flood is applicable to many situations in life and in the world. After the Flood shows both sides of the same universal coin: utter human suffering but also humanity's ability to heal and to see the sun rising once again.
Artist Biography
Eva Wientjes' work is the result of two desires: observing and depicting life as accurately as possible, and revealing the conflicting, emotional experience of being a human on this planet.
She began her studies in 2020 at the Florence Academy of Art / Sweden, where she was taught nineteenth century drawing- and painting techniques. After she graduated she was hired as Principal Instructor at the same academy. In the winter of 2023 she continued her training through an apprenticeship with the Norwegian painter Odd Nerdrum. Additionally, she completed a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Art History at the University of Groningen (2020) which contributed to her in-depth knowledge of historical paintings and classical techniques. Today, she works in her studio in her hometown of Groningen, the Netherlands.

Proprio come il mondo è stato creato nella storia di Adamo ed Eva, così Noè e l'Arca possono essere visti come il secondo inizio del mondo. In questo dipinto, l'artista ha scelto di concentrarsi sul momento successivo al diluvio. Invece di rappresentare il diluvio e il momento in cui tutto è perduto, “Dopo il diluvio” mostra la vita che si ricompone. Il diluvio è finito, gli orrori della catastrofe sono stati spazzati via e il mondo comincia a risvegliarsi.
Ghiberti ha mostrato nel suo capolavoro un piccolo gruppo di persone che escono dall'Arca e osservano per la prima volta un mondo cambiato. Proprio come Noè può essere visto come il secondo Adamo, così una figura femminile può essere vista come la succeditrice di Eva.
Per questo motivo, l'artista ha scelto di raffigurare una donna sdraiata su una roccia in mezzo a una landa desolata ricoperta d'acqua. Si sta svegliando, con i capelli ancora bagnati e il corpo provato dal disastro. La roccia e la donna sono sole in questo mondo allagato, ma piccoli fiori e piante spuntano tra le fessure e il fango. Anche se le nuvole scure continuano a incombere sul mondo, il sole inizia a fare capolino.
Quest'opera mostra la fase tra il dolore e la speranza, la speranza di un nuovo inizio. Mostra allo spettatore il momento in cui ci si prende cura delle proprie ferite e si comincia a credere che potrebbe esserci un futuro, ancora una volta.

Il lavoro di Eva Wientjes è il risultato di due desideri: osservare e rappresentare la vita nel modo più accurato possibile e rivelare l'esperienza emotiva e conflittuale dell'essere umano su questo pianeta.
Ha iniziato i suoi studi nel 2020 alla Florence Academy of Art Sweden, dove ha appreso le tecniche di disegno e pittura del XIX secolo. Dopo la laurea è stata assunta come insegnante principale nella stessa accademia. Nell'inverno del 2023 ha continuato la sua formazione attraverso un apprendistato con il pittore norvegese Odd Nerdrum. Inoltre, ha conseguito una laurea triennale e una magistrale in Storia dell'Arte presso l'Università di Groningen (2020), che hanno contribuito alla sua profonda conoscenza della pittura storica e delle tecniche classiche.
Oggi lavora nel suo studio nella sua città natale, Groningen, nei Paesi Bassi.
